Stryve'e Original Beef Biltong is an authentically flavored biltong with low sodium and zero sugar. The product does NOT taste like the beef jerky that you are used too and some people find the cloves to be too strong.
This is a nice product but it might take a few tries before this unique flavor profile grows on you.
Pros
Extremely Healthy
Unique Flavors
No MSGs, Gluten or Nitrites
Cons
Unique Flavors Will Take Many People By Surprise.
After not being able to find any biltong for sale for over a year it now appears to be readily available. Just last week I picked up a big bag of Stryve Beef Biltong at Walmart which means it should be available all over the country at this point.
{Update 5/25/22 This product is now available at Costco at a great price!}
I wanted to see how different this biltong was compared to the jerkies I have been eating as well as the one other biltong that I found at Aldi.

What Makes Stryve Biltong Different?
In Stryve's August, 2021 quarterly statement they provide the following information.
"Unlike beef jerky, Stryve's all-natural air-dried meat snack products are made of beef and spices, are never cooked, contain zero grams of sugar, and are free of monosodium glutamate (MSG), gluten, nitrates, nitrites, and preservatives.
As a result, Stryve's products are Keto and Paleo diet friendly.
Further, based on protein density and sugar content, Stryve believes that its air-dried meat snack products are some of the healthiest shelf-stable snacks available today."
How Does the Original Biltong Taste?
Stryve's Original Biltong tastes much different than I expected.
The first brand of biltong that I ever tried, Simms Biltong at Aldi, had a strong vinegar flavor. The Stryve biltong has a hint of vinegar but it is not a dominant flavor.
The flavor that took me by surprise was the nutmeg and cloves. The earthy, almost sweet flavor of the cloves really stood out to me and, at first, I didn't like the taste.
The flavor was unique enough that I kept thinking about the biltong. And grabbing another handful. And then another handful.
It is one of those flavor profiles that grew on me and I really appreciate that it doesn't taste like every other bag of beef jerky at the grocery store.
Other Customer Reviews
I wanted to see what other people thought of this product so I checked out the customer reviews on Walmart's website. There were not a lot of reviews (48 as of October, 2021) but they looked like I suspected they might.
- 81% of customers really like the biltong and left either 5 or 4 Star reviews.
- 14% of customers really disliked the biltong and left either 1 or 2 Star reviews.
Some of the Positive comments reviewers left included:
- Fantastic product! I've missed biltong in the US and normal beef jerky just doesn't compare to this classic taste of South Africa!
- This biltong is delicious. It tastes totally authentic, is spiced excellently, and is hands-down better than beef jerky!
- This actually tastes really close to biltong I'm used to and it's so much more affordable to other biltong I've bought in the States.
Some of the Negative comments reviewers left included:
- My husband likes it but i could taste the clove and it reminds me too much of clove cigarettes in the 80s
- Just awful. Tastes so bad. It's not jerked at all they are just trying to make some money having everyone buy a bag and try.
- The texture is soft but the taste is the most awful!
The main takeaway here is that you should NOT expect the biltong to taste like the beef jerky you are used to. If your mind and mouth are open to new flavors then this biltong is worth a try.
Costco Value
Costco is selling a 12 ounce bag of Stryve Biltong with a regular price of $11.99 and a special Instant Savings of $4.00.
At the regular price of $11.99 you are only going to be paying about $1 per ounce which is a pretty nice deal as far of biltong or jerky is concerned.
In comparison, an 8 ounce bag of the same biltong will cost you $11.64 at Walmart which works out to a cost of $1.46 an ounce which is almost 50% more than the Costco price!
